Business Tips - Save $$$ On Your Next Computer PurchaseSmall business finally has an alternative to purchasing the Microsoft Office suite. The open-source project OpenOffice provides a free replacement for almost all of the core functionality of Microsoft’s product. The bad news: OpenOffice does not include a replacement for Outlook. If all you use outlook for is email, Mozilla Thunderbird might be just what you need. We have several clients using the Thunderbird + OpenOffice combination on recent purchases, and there are no major issues exchanging email and sharing files with users of older versions of the Microsoft suite. If your organization is using an Exchange server, and you rely heavily on public folders or Outlook calendaring and contacts, you’re probably out of luck. Don’t Forget Anti-Virus Software! After recommending Norton Antivirus for years, we’ve been forced to move away from that product due to overwhelming bloat and support which has been consistently worse every year. Although Norton still does an excellent job of detecting and removing viruses, the performance issues are a major problem. You shouldn’t have to upgrade your computer just to run anti-virus software! We now recommend AVG Antivirus, which is free for home use, or $34.99 for a one-year commercial license. AVG is fast, efficient, and will run on just about anything. For a single seat, click here to buy a license. Call us for volume discounts and specialty packages like file server, email server, or Linux protection.
